Description
Sickle cell disease is the most common monogenic hematologic disorders that causes significant morbidity and mortality, both in children and adults. Management of Sickle Cell Disease is multidisciplinary in nature with an aim of reducing the number and severity of vasoocclusive crises, infection and both short and long- term complications of the disease. An effective health maintenance program is also imperative in the transition of the patient from pediatric to adult hematological care.
Objectives
1. To understand the epidemiology, pathophysiology and clinical manifestations of sickle cell disease
2. To review the management of acute and chronic complications of sickle cell disease and institute a detailed patient follow-up plan.
3. To explain the appropriate use of transfusion in SCD, and describe the complications, assessment and treatment of transfusion iron overload.
4. To demonstrate a working knowledge and practical competency for acute and chronic pain management and other psychosocial issues in patients with sickle cell disease.
5. To apply the knowledge learnt in a clinical setting.
