Description

This Continuing Medical Education (CME) session will provide an in-depth review of Gambling Disorder as a behavioral addiction with significant psychiatric, medical, social, and economic consequences. The session will explore epidemiology, neurobiological underpinnings, risk factors, diagnostic criteria, and comorbidities, including depression, anxiety, substance use disorders, and suicidality. Participants will review current diagnostic standards based on the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5-TR) and examine evidence-based screening tools applicable in primary care and mental health settings. The session will also cover pharmacological and psychotherapeutic interventions, motivational interviewing strategies, harm-reduction approaches, and referral pathways for specialized addiction services. Emphasis will be placed on early identification, stigma reduction, multidisciplinary management, and integration of care within general medical practice.

Objectives

By the end of this session, participants will be able to: Define Gambling Disorder and describe its classification as a behavioral addiction. Identify risk factors and vulnerable populations, including adolescents, individuals with substance use disorders, and those with mood disorders. Apply DSM-5-TR diagnostic criteria in clinical assessment. Utilize validated screening tools for early detection in primary care and psychiatric settings. Recognize common psychiatric and medical comorbidities associated with Gambling Disorder. Develop evidence-based management plans, including: Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) Motivational Interviewing Pharmacologic options (e.g., SSRIs, naltrexone where appropriate) Address crisis situations, including suicidality and severe financial or social consequences. Implement referral and multidisciplinary collaboration strategies for long-term management and relapse prevention. Promote preventive education and community awareness initiatives.
